  11.    Like anybody waking up, it is
  12. hungry. But the computer hungers
  13. for more information. It checks to
  14. see if a bootable disk is in drive
  15. A:.  If not, it looks for a hard
  16. disk with system files.
  17.    A bootable disk is one that
  18. contains "system files." These
  19. three are MSDOS.SYS, IO.SYS and
  20. COMMAND.COM.  You might have seen
  21. COMMAND.COM on some of your
  22. floppies, but the other two are
  23. usually hidden on a bootable disk.
  24. They are there, but you don't see
  25. them when you type "dir."
  26.    The computer then reads these
  27. three files.  They tell it all
  28. about becoming a real computer.
  29. Once it reads these files, it
  30. knows how to run programs.
  31.    Just like when you read a
  32. book, the computer puts this
  33. information in short-term

  37. memory. On a computer, this is
  38. the RAM. These are several I.C.
  39. chips that can hold hundreds of
  40. thousands of individual bytes.
  41.    Next, the computer will look for
  42. files called AUTOEXEC.BAT and
  43. CONFIG.SYS on the bootable disk.
  44. These are special files in which
  45. the user can write instructions to
  46. tell the computer to automatically
  47. load chosen programs.  If no AUTO-
  48. EXEC.BAT file is found, the computer
  49. asks about the date and time.
  50.     The computer has several timing
  51. crystals which keep its thinking
  52. organized. One is also used to keep
  53. track of the time and date.  Many
  54. computers also have a small
  55. rechargeable battery and an IC chip
  56. that keeps track of the time even
  57. when the main power switch is
  58. turned off.  This small part of the
  59. computer is always awake.
